Natural. It’s a word we’ve heard everywhere these last few years - natural foods, natural living, natural skincare. In 2018, the global market value for natural products was USD $35 billion and it’s estimated to grow even more to USD $55 billion by 2027.
But what exactly defines “natural” skincare? Natural is a label that isn’t regulated by the government, meaning that anyone can take the word, and slap it onto their labels. Compare this to anything organic, which requires going through a strict government regulation process to ensure that the products are produced free of any chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial ingredients in both Canada and the US.
In the last few years, artificial preservatives, synthetic ingredients, and parabens have all been stigmatized in the cosmetics industry for being “bad for you” - but what are they exactly? Parabens, for example, are a common type of preservative that prevent bacteria and mold from growing in products. These same parabens have been linked to a 2004 British study that showed parabens to remain within the skin after usage, with no research to confirm any adverse effects from the small amount used in cosmetics. Yet “paraben-free” is now a common label amongst natural beauty brands, many touting alternative preservatives that are now available on the market.
The importance here is not in the labels. Regardless of how “natural” a product claims to be, its ingredients can still be harmful to you and your skin. It’s more important that we, as consumers, understand what exact ingredients are going onto our skin and how they benefit or impact us.
Every company defines “natural” differently. So what does natural look like for us at SCHMEAR Naturals?
wholesome skincare with recognizable ingredients
At SCHMEAR, we want to keep it simple. We’re all about using real food ingredients that you can recognize off of our product labels, because we believe that everyone should know what’s going onto their skin. This means that all of our products don’t use synthetic preservatives, colours, or fragrances.
Instead, we achieve this through the inherent qualities of our ingredients. The dried powder format of our Superfood Masks prevents them from expiring; and our Botanical Oil formulations naturally contain Vitamin E, an antioxidant that naturally prevents rancidity. All the while, our products are jam-packed with a number of vitamins, antioxidants, and benefits that truly help nourish your skin.
Our skincare is made for real people with real skin needs, and because of that, all of our products are tested by us and handmade with care.
what ingredients does SCHMEAR use?
All of SCHMEAR’s ingredients are derived from fruits, vegetables, grains, and botanicals. While we break down all of our product ingredients and their benefits here, here’s a list of some of our star ingredients.
- Colloidal Oats: Our base ingredient for our Superfood Masks and Powder Cleanser. An FDA-approved ingredient that is rich in natural starches and fibres. They’re excellent for soothing any skin conditions and naturally help cleanse and moisturize.
- Rosehip Oil: A primary ingredient for our popular Rosehip + Sea Buckthorn Oil. It’s incredibly rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, along with holding an impressive punch with its Vitamin A and E count. Rosehip oil is great for protecting your skin against UV damage and keeping your skin barrier elastic and moisturized.
- Tamanu Oil: A primary ingredient for our clarifying Argan + Tamanu Oil. It’s a chlorophyll-rich oil that offers a variety of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits for skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, eczema, and more.
- Aloe Vera: A key ingredient for our Aloe Vera + Blue Pea Toner
Everyone deserves to feel really, really good about their skin. And we’re here to help with that.
